I have explored many different career fields. Some of my educational achievements include a Bachelor of Science from Valdosta State University; a Registered Dental Certificate from Austin Community College; and two different specialized photography certificates from the New York Institute of Photography and Photography Institute. My photos have been internationally published by Serbin Communications and Nature Photographer Magazine. With over 11 years of photography experience, I am looking forward to a new chapter in life.


I am a Core Registered Paralegal student and an honors society member who will graduate with honors from the College of Lake County’s ABA Legal Studies program this May. The program focused on practical skills and knowledge in the areas of legal research and writing; business writing and drafting; with core knowledge in specialty elective courses including:


Family law,

Immigration law,

Criminal litigation,

Litigation, and

Legal Technology.

Fieldwork:


For Capstone (LGL 251)

I completed a minimum of twenty-four hours of fieldwork under the direction and supervision of Julia Funke, Esq.


Julia Funke Esq., a managing attorney with ILBSG has over a decade's worth of immigration law experience. Her passionate journey for immigration law started with studying Spanish and international policies at Northern Illinois University. Following NIU, she enrolled as a law student at John Marshall where later she herself was an intern with the Farmworker and Landscaper Advocacy Project for ILBSG.


In addition to being a managing attorney, she also teaches Immigration Law with the College of Lake County.

About the Program


The Legal Studies program prepares students for successful, productive employment and contributions to the legal and business fields. Our program prepares students to perform substantive and procedural legal work under the supervision of an attorney. All courses are taught by practicing attorneys.


We offer two ABA-approved program options: an AAS degree for those with no prior college degree, and a post-degree Certificate option for those who already have an AA degree or higher. Our program also serves as an excellent transfer option for pre-law.

Legal Studies Electives


LGL 233 Criminal Litigation: Students learn the principles of criminal litigation, the criminal court system, are introduced to the rules of criminal procedure, discovery, and corrections. The course addresses pre-trial investigation and practice, pretrial motions, trial preparations, basics of a criminal trial, post-trial motions, sentencing, and appeals. The role of the paralegal during pretrial preparation for hearings and trials will also be addressed.


LGL 230 Family Law: Topics include formal and informal marriages, premarital agreements, separation, divorce, annulment, marital property, the parent-child relationship, child custody and support, adoption, guardianship, legal issues in alternative families, domestic relations court procedures, public records research, and the paralegal role in alternative dispute resolution/mediation processes.


LGL 114 Litigation: Students learn the principles of civil litigation in federal and state courts and are introduced to the rules of procedure and discovery. The course addresses pre-trial practice, pretrial motions, trial preparations, basics of a civil trial, post-trial motions and appeals. The role of the paralegal during trials will also be addressed.


LGL 215 Immigration Law: Students learn about the immigration system - who can come to the United States, who can stay, and who must leave - including a brief history of immigration law. This course also trains paralegals to work with clients to seek specific visas, including how to gather and present information and complete documentation required for the various visas. This course introduces and explores all significant aspects of the immigration and naturalization process.


LGL 211 Drafting Legal Documents: This course provides an in-depth, hands on training in practical legal writing with a special focus on document preparation, transactional documents, use of form books and everyday law office writing, including the preparation, research, and drafting of pleadings, forms, and motions.


The Paralegal CORE Competency Exam™ (PCCE®) was developed to assess the knowledge, skills and ability of early-career and entry-level paralegals. The Paralegal CORE Competency Exam® (PCCE®) establishes your education has prepared you for many types of paralegal work and helps you stand out from others whose schooling and experience are otherwise similar. Those who have passed the PCCE may proudly display the CRP® designation after their name.
